Contributions to the database are open to all Infrastructure Managers worldwide. Since its inception in 2006, 36 companies from 33 countries have contributed. The Safety Performance Group aims to extend its reach beyond its current scope. It seeks to achieve international harmonization of definitions and perimeters, ensuring that safety data is confidentially shared and comparable across various countries and regions. Based on the UIC Safety Database, the Safety Performance Group publishes an annual Safety Report in both public and confidential versions.
The UIC Safety Public Report presents aggregated data and is available to the general public, promoting transparency and fostering trust in railway safety practices. Since 2022, the UIC Task Force on Safety Barriers has been developing a definition and classification system for safety barriers, aiming to create a comprehensive global framework that provides an organized safety barrier library to enhance safety and interoperability across networks worldwide.
The task force laid a strong foundation for the principles of safety barrier definition and classification by publishing two white papers.
