Our commitment

Union Internationale des Chemins de fer (UIC) is committed to making its public website accessible in accordance with Article 47 of French Law No. 2005-102 of 11 February 2005 (opens in new tab), the European Accessibility Act (Directive 2019/882) (opens in new tab) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 (opens in new tab) at level AA.

Accessibility is a continuous effort. This statement describes the current compliance status of uic.org and the measures we take to improve the experience for all visitors, including people with disabilities.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 level AA (opens in new tab) due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

The assessment is based on self-evaluation and ongoing audits of key user journeys (navigation, search, article reading, event registration and contact forms).

Accessibility measures

To improve accessibility, we apply the following measures throughout development:

  • Semantic HTML structure and logical heading hierarchy
  • Keyboard navigable interactive components
  • Visible focus indicators and sufficient colour contrast targets
  • Alternative text for informative images
  • ARIA attributes where native semantics are insufficient
  • Respect for reduced-motion preferences for decorative animations
  • Progressive enhancement so core content remains available without JavaScript

Technical environment

This website is built with Next.js (opens in new tab) and tested with recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge on desktop and mobile. We recommend using an up-to-date browser and operating system with assistive technologies such as screen readers (NVDA (opens in new tab), JAWS (opens in new tab), VoiceOver (opens in new tab)) or speech recognition software.

Non-accessible content

Despite our efforts, some content may not yet be fully accessible:

  • Some legacy PDF documents linked from articles may not be fully tagged
  • Embedded third-party content (videos, maps, social feeds) may not meet the same accessibility standards
  • Some interactive data visualisations may not yet expose full textual alternatives
  • Colour contrast on certain decorative or user-generated elements may occasionally fall below AA thresholds

We are working to remediate these issues as content is migrated and redesigned.
