Train Operation

Harmonisation is the basis for a seamless international and border crossing freight traffic. UIC facilitates best practice sharing to ensure interoperability as well as increase the commercial speed of train traffic. A key part of this competence centre is corridor development, ensuring that significant traffic flows are being prioritised and investments being put in place.

Dangerous Goods

The transport of dangerous goods is subject to specific regulatory measures stipulated by the competent international, European, or national authorities, as well as certain measures taken by companies themselves. Dangerous goods safety on the railways is based on general railway operational safety. This area is managed by UIC in close consultation with its members and in cooperation with other stakeholders.

Wagon users

Wagons are a key asset in rail freight transport. UIC works in this area to ensure the interoperability, availability, and easy and safe handover of wagons, which has a direct impact on operational capacity and overall cost.

Freight Forum

The objectives of the UIC Freight Forum are: - To enhance cross-border interoperability by harmonising processes linked to business, operations and information exchange - To encourage process digitalisation and the implementation of technological game-changers as key drivers of a modal shift towards rail and towards a more sustainable society - To ensure that the highest possible levels of safety and security are maintained within any process change - To enhance the productivity of the sector and support the development of innovative products and service offerings for the benefit of the customer These objectives are achieved by reinforcing UIC’s position in managing and facilitating multilateral cooperation between railway undertakings and the broader logistics ecosystem in non-competitive areas. The Freight Department runs projects that provide business value for members and organises knowledge transfer between members and from other industries by means of benchmarking, workshops and conferences. It also establishes working partnerships with strategic stakeholders in the supply chain within and outside of the sector and modes of transport (intermodal operators, freight forwarders, etc.)
